PORUKA ZA SVJETSKI DAN POZORIŠTA 2022

Dragi prijatelji,

Dok svijet ubrzano svakog sata i minuta prima nove vijesti, mogu li da nas sve, kao stvaraoce, pozovem da pristupimo istinskom prostoru i sferi i perspektivi epskih vremena, epskih promjena, epske svijesti, epskih promišljanja i epskih pogleda? Živimo u epskom dobu ljudske istorije, a dubinske i značajne promene koje proživljavamo u pogledu odnosa ljudi sa samima sobom, sa drugim ljudima i sa ostalim svijetom skoro su van našeg opsega da ih spoznamo, artikulišemo, iskažemo, izgovorimo.

Mi ne živimo u dvadesetčetvoročasovnom ciklusu vijesti, već živimo na kraju vremena. Novine i mediji su u potpunosti nepripremljeni i nemoćni da se uhvate u koštac sa svim stvarima koje proživljavamo.

Gdje je jezik, gdje su pokreti i gdje su slike koji bi nam omogućili da shvatimo suštinske promjene i raskole koje doživljavamo? I kako možemo da shvatimo sadržaj naših trenutnih života kao iskustvo, a ne kao novinsko izvještavanje?

Pozorište je umjetnička forma iskustva.

Kako u svijetu koji je preplavljen opsežnim medijskim kampanjama, simuliranim iskustvima i turobnim predviđanjima možemo da dosegnemo van neprekidnog ponavljanja brojki da bismo iskusili ono svjetovno i beskrajno u pojedinačnom životu, ekosistemu, prijateljstvu i svjetla na plavom nebu? Dvije godine pandemije korona virusa su utihnule ljudska čula, suzile ljudske živote, uništile veze među njima i vratile nas na jedan neobični početak ljudske života.

Koje sjeme treba posaditi i uzgajati u ovo vrijeme, a koje izraslo, napadno korijenje treba zatrijeti, potpuno i za sva vremena? Mnogo ljudi je na ivici. Mnogo se nasilja rasplamsalo, neracionalno i neočekivano. Mnogo se utemeljenih okvira pokazalo kao strukture neprekidne okrutnosti.

Gde je naša kultura sjećanja? Čega treba da se sjećamo? Koji nam rituali napokon dozvoljavaju da ponovo izmislimo i započnemo korake koje nikada nismo napravili? Pozorištu epskih vizija, svrhe, oporavka, popravka i brige trebaju novi rituali. Nama ne treba zabava. Nama treba okupljanje. Treba da dijelimo prostor i gradimo zajednički prostor. Treba nam zaštićeni prostor suštinskog razumijevanja i jednakosti. Pozorište je stvaranje, na Zemlji, prostora jednakosti među ljudima, bogovima, biljkama, životinjama, kapima kiše, suzama i preporoda. Prostor jednakosti i suštinskog razumijevanja osvjetljava skrivena ljepota koju održava živom suštinski odnos opasnosti, spokoja, mudrosti, delovanja i strpljenja.

U spisu Avatamsaka Sutra, Buda nabraja deset vrsta strpljenja u ljudskom životu. Jedno od najsnažnijih je „Strpljenje da spoznamo sve kao opsenu“. Pozorište je oduvijek predstavljalo život na ovom svijetu kao opsenu, dajući nam mogućnost da oslobađajućom jasnoćom i silom dokučimo ljudsku iluziju, zabludu, sljepilo i poricanje. Toliko smo ubijeđeni u ono što posmatramo i način na koji posmatramo da ne možemo da vidimo i osjetimo alternativne stvarnosti, nove mogućnosti, drugačije pristupe, nevidljive odnose i bezvremenske veze.

Ovo je vrijeme za suštinsko osvježavanje naših umova, naših čula, naše mašte, naših istorija i naših budućnosti. To ne mogu da urade ljudi koji rade sami, izolovani od drugih. To je nešto što moramo da uradimo zajedno. Pozorište nas poziva da to učinimo zajedno.

World Theatre Day Message 2022 by Peter SELLARS

Dear Friends,


As the world hangs by the hour and by the minute on a daily drip feed of news reportage, may I invite all of us, as creators, to enter our proper scope and sphere and perspective of epic time, epic change, epic awareness, epic reflection, and epic vision? We are living in an epic period in human history and the deep and consequential changes we are experiencing in human beings’ relations to themselves, to each other, and to nonhuman worlds are nearly beyond our abilities to grasp, to articulate, to speak of, and to express.


We are not living in the 24-hour news cycle, we are living at the edge of time. Newspapers and media are completely unequipped and unable to deal with what we are experiencing.


Where is the language, what are the moves, and what are the images that might allow us to comprehend the deep shifts and ruptures that we are experiencing? And how can we convey the content of our lives right now not as reportage but experience?


Theater is the artform of experience.

In a world overwhelmed by vast press campaigns, simulated experiences, ghastly prognostications, how can we reach beyond the endless repeating of numbers to experience the sanctity and infinity of a single life, a single ecosystem, a friendship, or the quality of light in a strange sky? Two years of COVID-19 have dimmed people’s senses, narrowed people’s lives, broken connections, and put us at a strange ground zero of human habitation.


What seeds need to be planted and replanted in these years, and what are the overgrown, invasive species that need to be fully and finally removed? So many people are on edge. So much violence is flaring, irrationally or unexpectedly. So many established systems have been revealed as structures of ongoing cruelty.


Where are our ceremonies of remembrance? What do we need to remember? What are the rituals that allow us at last to reimagine and begin to rehearse steps that we have never taken before?

The theater of epic vision, purpose, recovery, repair, and care needs new rituals. We don’t need to be entertained. We need to gather. We need to share space, and we need to cultivate shared space. We need protected spaces of deep listening and equality.


Theater is the creation on earth of the space of equality between humans, gods, plants, animals, raindrops, tears, and regeneration. The space of equality and deep listening is illuminated by hidden beauty, kept alive in a deep interaction of danger, equanimity, wisdom, action, and patience.


In The Flower Ornament Sutra, Buddha lists ten kinds of great patience in human life. One of the most powerful is called Patience in Perceiving All as Mirages. Theater has always presented the life of this world as resembling a mirage, enabling us to see through human illusion, delusion, blindness, and denial with liberating clarity and force.


We are so certain of what we are looking at and the way we are looking at it that we are unable to see and feel alternative realities, new possibilities, different approaches, invisible relationships, and timeless connections.


This is a time for deep refreshment of our minds, of our senses, of our imaginations, of our histories, and of our futures. This work cannot be done by isolated people working alone. This is work that we need to do together. Theater is the invitation to do this work together.

“This has been such a very difficult time for live performance and many artists, technicians and craftsmen and women have struggled in a profession that is already fraught with insecurity. Maybe that always present insecurity has made them more able to survive this pandemic with wit and courage. Their imagination has already translated itself, in these new circumstances, into inventive, entertaining and moving ways to communicate, thanks of course in large part to the internet. Human beings have told each other stories for as long as they have been on the planet. The beautiful culture of theatre will live for as long as we stay here. The creative urge of writers, designers, dancers, singers, actors, musicians, directors, will never be suffocated and in the very near future will flourish again with a new energy and a new understanding of the world we all share. I can’t wait!”

Helen Mirren is a one of the best known and most respected actresses with an international career that spans stage, screen and television and has won many awards for her powerful and versatile performances, including the Academy Award in 2007 for her performance in The Queen.

Theatre
Helen Mirren began her career playing Cleopatra with the National Youth Theatre. She then appeared in rep in Manchester and from there she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. After four notable years at the RSC Helen took a complete change of direction, when she went to work with renowned director Peter Brook’s theatre company Centre de Recherche Théâtral and toured Africa and America.

Since then her theatre work has spanned numerous productions in the West End, the Fringe, the RSC, the National Theatre and Broadway in the US including A Month in the Country, for which she received a Tony nomination and The Dance of Death on Broadway opposite Ian McKellan.

Subsequent productions include Orpheus Descending at the Donmar Warehouse and Mourning Becomes Electra at the National Theatre for which she was nominated for an Olivier Best Actress Award.

She returned to the National Theatre in 2009 in the title role of Racine’s Phèdre directed by Nicholas Hytner. This made history when it became the first theatre production to be filmed for NTLive and seen in cinemas throughout the world.

In her most recent performance in 2013 in London’s West End, she reprised her role of Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience by Peter Morgan and directed by Stephen Daldry.

She won an Olivier Award and a What’s On Stage award for Best Actress. In February 2015 The Audience transferred to the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, New York with Helen Mirren still in the title role, for which she won the Tony Awards for Best Actress.

Additionally, to her career on the stage, Helen Mirren is very well known for our outstanding achievements on screen and television.

In 2003 Helen Mirren was appointed a Dame of the British Empire.
